A new teacher walks into their first classroom with a credential in hand and a head full of preparation. What many do not realize is that the credential that got them into the classroom is not enough to keep them there.

In 32 states, including California, teachers are required by law to complete a new teacher induction program within their first few years to earn the credential that allows them to keep teaching long-term. Done well, induction pairs a new teacher with an experienced mentor who provides sustained, personalized support: the kind of support that helps a teacher figure out not just what to do, but who they are becoming in that classroom. Research is clear: teachers who receive this support stay in the profession longer, grow faster, and create better outcomes for students.

Emily is a first-year teacher in San Francisco. She knew she needed induction, so she did what she was supposed to do. She tried to enroll in her local program. It had a waitlist. When a spot opened, she was told she would need to find her own mentor. She could not secure one. She has been trying to figure it out on her own ever since.

Emily can enroll in Gateway Teacher Induction, a program built specifically to provide the individualized, site-based mentoring that research shows makes the difference. But because she would be completing induction outside her district, she has to pay for it herself. For a first-year teacher, $12,500 out of pocket is not a small ask.
